It is listed in the product spec, but i somehow missed it. One thing that wasnt too obvious when i bought what amps the USB needed.

I've used this to connect between the optical out on the tv and a non-optical amp so will be controlling the volume via tv remote. The product does not come with RCA, phono or 3.5mm output cables (which is fine).ĭue to the nature of the DAC, it would of been nice to have some velcro included to mount it somewhere hidden. Power LED does not glare like some do, so that's a definite plus. the included optical cable securely clicks in which was nice and no chance of it falling out. i opted for this unit as a number of smaller optical DAC's claimed to have audio quality issues which i've not experienced any of with this unit. On the Lindy DAC, the volume knob controlled just the headphone output, which makes more sense to me. The only minor downside with the Avantree is that the volume control knob sets the overall volume. I haven't used mine, as I already had an optical cable in situ. A nice touch on the Avantree is the on/off switch, which I guess would prolong the life of the unit, if used to switch it off when not in use.Īnother nice touch is that the Avantree comes with an optical cable in the box. On the Lindy, the inputs were in the back of the device & the outputs at the front, which looked messy. It is well designed, with all cable connectors at the rear. The Avantree DAC is compact & feels solidly built. Unlike my Lindy DAC, there is no USB input on the Avantree DAC, so you can't connect a laptop as the sound source using a USB port, but I didn't use this once on the Lindy. I am not an audiophile, but for me, this Avantree DAC provides good sound quality from both the optical & co-ax outputs, to my ancient Arcam amp. This was bought to replace a more expensive Lindy DAC, which after 4 years had started to produce crackling on the output from its co-ax connection. A recommended product and yes I bought this with my own money and I am not connected to Avantree in any way. No bright laser like light either, just a discreet green light to let you know its on.ĭid I get the sound quality I wanted? A qualified yes to this, sound is very good and clear with no loss of quality. My ears can't tell if there are any faults with the sound.

My old unit did not have this feature and I had to turn the amp up a lot more to get a full sound. I turned this up to full as it makes it easier to adjust the sound on my amplifier.

There is also a headphone socket if your TV doesn't have one (Output only, you can't plug a phone etc into it.) Importantly there is a volume control which controls the headphone output and the RCA (Phono) output. The other is to switch between the optical and coax inputs. One is a power on/off switch, though I just leave it on as the unit turns off when you turn off the TV and on when you turn on the TV. The unit is very well made from metal and is small enough to tuck away, though you might want to keep it accessible as there are two switches you might want to use. All the leads go into the Avantree and are clearly marked. Connected the supplied USB power lead to a USB socket on my TV, connected the supplied optical lead in, connected the phono leads to my amp and a digital Coax from my Blu Ray. It arrived and I plugged it in straight out of the box. This 'improved' model is the one to get as there are plenty of reviews for the earlier version that show up some shortcommings. I was never happy with the sound from the cheap box and decided to buy the Avantree DAC and bite the bullet of the £24 cost. Previously I had used a cheap little black box device to do this, there's loads about priced around £10. If you want to input a Coax digital lead from your DVD / Blu Ray player you will need a lead for this. So: To use your TV into a stereo amplifier you need: A DAC, optical lead (Toslink) and a pair of phono to phono leads. I needed a DAC (Digital to analogue converter) to run my TV into my stereo system that has no optical inputs.
